We’ve got live scoring updates, news and analysis from the Raiders’ preseason game against the Rams in Los Angeles on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Since Oakland will open the regular season against the Rams on Sept. 10, both teams will play things close to the vest on Saturday, which will likely make for a game lacking play-calling creativity. In addition, don’t expect to see many Raiders or Rams starters in action for too long in Week 2 of the preseason.

Still, there’s plenty of intrigue for Raiders fans, who should get their first extended look at starting cornerback Gareon Conley, last year’s No. 1 pick who finally seems healthy and ready to contribute. Also, exciting rookie defensive lineman Arden Key bears watching.

Former Cal quarterback Jared Goff may see a little time for the Rams, who likely won’t utilize Todd Gurley, the league’s most exciting running back.

However meaningless Saturday’s game will be, new Raiders coach Jon Gruden will get his first chance to square off against one of his former assistant coaches, Rams head coach Sean McVay.

Live updates: Raiders vs. Packers in preseason, Friday night

We’ll have live scoring updates, news and analysis from the Raiders’ preseason game against the Green Bay Packers at the Coliseum on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Fans will get a pretty good look at most of the Raiders starters as Jon Gruden indicated his regulars will play into the second quarter of their third preseason game. So look for Derek Carr to air it out a bit before giving way to battling backup quarterbacks Connor Cook and EJ Manuel.

While Marshawn Lynch should see some carries, undrafted rookie Chris Warren III should get another long look. Warren’s 196 rushing yards through two weeks are the most in the NFL.

Offensive tackle Donald Penn will get his first action on the right side while cornerback Gareon Conley will bear watching in his first game at the Coliseum since Week 2 last season.

There will be no homecoming for Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, however. The ex-Cal standout will not play Friday, neither will his top target, Davante Adams, who played with Carr at Fresno State.

Get live updates, news and analysis Sunday at 10 a.m. as the Raiders look to ride the momentum of last week’s victory when they travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens.

The Raiders (2-8) hurt their 2019 draft position by snapping their five-game losing streak in a 23-21 win over Arizona last Sunday, but don’t tell that to Derek Carr.

In order to win again, the Raiders will need to figure out a way to slow down Ravens rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson, who did something the NFL hasn’t seen in nearly 70 years last week. Jackson, the former Heisman Trophy winner from Louisville, ran the ball a whopping 27 times for 119 yards in a 24-21 victory over the Bengals. The 24 carries were the most for an NFL quarterback since 1960.

Jackson started in place of the injured Joe Flacco (hip) and also completed 13 of 19 passes for 150 yards against the Bengals. But it was his 119 yards on the ground that helped fuel the Ravens to 265 yards rushing. Can the Raiders, who have allowed a 142 yards rushing per game, stop Baltimore?

Meanwhile, can Carr and the offense build on their 23-point performance against Arizona? It was, after all, the first time in six games Oakland has scored more than 10 points.

The Raiders’ next game is a home game against the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Live updates: Raiders vs. Chiefs, Sunday afternoon

Get live updates, news and analysis Sunday at 1:05 p.m. as the Raiders try to slow down the high-scoring Kansas City Chiefs at the Coliseum.

Kansas City (9-2) comes into Oakland on the heels of a scandalous episode that resulted in the Chiefs releasing their star running back Kareem Hunt Friday. Hunt was let go hours after a video surfaced of him physically assaulting a woman last February. Hunt, who was fifth in the NFL with 824 rushing yards, will be replaced by veteran backup Spencer Ware.

The Chiefs have been installed as a whopping 14-point favorite over the Raiders (2-9), who are coming off a 34-17 throttling by the Ravens in Baltimore last Sunday. Further depressing news for Raiders fans: Kansas City has won 19 of its last 20 games against AFC West opponents.

To have any chance of an upset, Derek Carr and the Raiders offense need to be much better than they’ve been all season. Oakland has only scored 23 or more points three times in 11 games. Kansas City, on the other hand, is the NFL’s second-leading scoring team at 37.6 points per game.

The Chiefs will be playing for the first time since losing the most entertaining regular season game in years when they lost 54-51 to the Rams on Monday night.

The Raiders will stay home for their next game a week from Sunday when the Steelers come to town.

Why ex-Raiders great says Amari Cooper is ‘a sissy’ and ‘a punk’

An old-time Raiders great reacted angrily after hearing Amari Cooper say he’s thriving in Dallas mostly because he wasn’t happy in Oakland, and wasn’t being used properly in Jon Gruden’s offense.

In between calling Cooper a few derogatory names during a Las Vegas radio interview Sunday, 69-year-old Phil Villapiano said the Cowboys wide receiver is lucky his nasty, intimidating linebacker days are over.

“That’s a punk talking,” a worked-up Villapiano said about Cooper on CBS Sports Radio 1140’s “Silver and Black Today” show. “That is a little sissy.

“If I was still playing and we were playing Dallas next year, that guy would have a problem coming over the middle. He couldn’t,” Villapiano said, alluding to the old Raiders’ treatment of talkative Steelers rival Lynn Swann. “Jack Tatum, myself and George Atkinson would annihilate the guy, talking like that. He’s getting into the Lynn Swann-like type (of) personality.”

Villapiano would also tell you it’s a good thing for Cooper the Cowboys won’t face the Raiders in the regular season until the 2021 season in Dallas.

Cooper told Yahoo Sports last week the Oct. 22 trade that sent him to Dallas for a No. 1 pick “kind of changed me .. as a person a little bit.” Cooper noted he’s been playing with more passion and having more fun since leaving the Raiders.

“I wasn’t really happy in Oakland or anything like that,” said Cooper, who has enjoyed his time in Dallas, helping the Cowboys go 4-1 by catching 30 passes for 424 yards and three touchdowns. “(The Raiders) basically said, ‘We could get a guy, who’s going to contribute better than he will, in the first round.’ And I didn’t know how to feel about that.

“I just always felt like I wasn’t really being used how I felt like I would have used me if I was the coach. So I looked at it from that perspective, not from the perspective that, ‘Oh, they don’t think I’m good enough’ or I’m not good enough.”

If you ask Villapiano, it was about damn time the Raiders got rid of their under-performing former No. 1 pick.

“I wanted (Cooper) off the team last year,” said Villapiano, a four-time Pro Bowl player during the Raiders’ bad-boy era of the ’70s. “He couldn’t catch the ball on third down. I thought it was a great move when Gruden got rid of him this year because he didn’t perform for the Raiders.

“Not being used properly? Your job is to catch the ball. Catch the ball, jerk,” a peeved Villapiano said. “NFL football is black and white. You don’t do your job, you’re out of here. And that’s why Gruden traded him, I think.

“Now, I’ve got a problem with the Khalil Mack trade because that guy was doing his job,” he added. “I’m not afraid to say that. That was a bad one.

“Except we need him to show up,” Villapiano said of Mack’s pre-trade holdout. “If he’s not gonna show up, then we’ll take two number one picks.”

Live updates: Raiders pull out last-second win over Steelers

Get live updates, news and analysis Sunday at 1:25 p.m. when the Raiders take on the slumping Pittsburgh Steelers at the Coliseum.

While the Steelers (7-4-1) come to Oakland focused on a playoff berth, the Raiders are looking for at least some respectability, if not an upset win against their longtime rivals. Oakland is tied with the 49ers for the worst record in the NFL as either team could be picking first in the 2019 draft.

The Raiders have lost seven of their last eight games, including a 40-33 shootout loss to the Chiefs in Oakland last Sunday. Oakland would certainly settle for another 442-yard offensive output and anything close to the 171 rushing yards it gained on Kansas City.

Pittsburgh is one-half game ahead of the Ravens in the AFC North race but has lost its last two games. The Steelers were beaten 33-30 by the Los Angeles Chargers last week, a game that also cost them their leading rusher, James Conner, for this Sunday’s game and probably longer. Conner, fifth in the NFL with 909 rushing yards, suffered a sprained ankle that could sideline him as long as four weeks.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is as dangerous as ever for the Steelers and will be quite a test for the Oakland defense. He’s thrown for 3,945 yards and 26 scoring passes while completing 66 percent of his passes.

The Raiders will next travel to Cincinnati to face the struggling Bengals (5-7) a week from Sunday.
